TYPES AND WORKING PRINCIPLES

The three types of piezoresistive gauges produced by Dynasen are the Manganin, the Ytterbium and the Carbon stress gauges. The Manganin and Ytterbium increase in resistance with stress whereas Carbon gauges decrease in resistance. These gauges are shown below along with a general description of each item.

MANGANIN AND YTTERBIUM 50-OHM GAUGES (GRID TYPE )

MODELS MN8-50-EK, MN4-50-EK, YB8-50-EK.

Dynasen’s grid-type 50-Ohm Manganin or Ytterbium gauge, also referred to as a foil gauge, is a 50 Ohm grid-and-lead assembly that is obtained from photo-etching of foils or of vapor-deposited films and sandwiched between two layers of Kapton or of another suitable thin insulator using epoxy resin as gauge filler and binder. The leads of the manganin gauges are coated with vapor-deposited Cu to minimize their electrical resistance's. ( < 0. 3 Ohm). The Ytterbium gauges are made entirely from vapor deposition and photo-etching processes.
The typical recommended ranges for the 50-Ohm Manganin and Ytterbium gauges are 0-100Kbars (0-10 GPA) and 0-10 Kbars (0-1 GPA) respectively. Standard 50-Ohm manganin and Ytterbium gauges utilize 0.001 Inch-thick Kapton as insulation. Other manganin foil thicknesses (0.0001 and 0.0002 Inch), and insulator types (Mica or FEP Teflon) of various thicknesses are available for the construction of Dynasen’s 50-Ohm manganin stress gauges. Other gauge resistance's are also available upon request. Click here to down load the calibration curve for this type gauge.

MANGANIN GAUGES ,.050 OHM, (LOW IMPEDANCE ,STRIP TYPE)

MODELS MN10-.050-EPTFE, MN10-.050-EFEP
,
Dynasen’s low-impedance Manganin stress gauges are 0.001 Inch-thick single-strip four-terminal sensor-and-lead assemblies that are encapsulated between two layers of Teflon-like polymers (PTFE or FEP), using hot-press or epoxy lamination processes.
PTFE is Polytetrafluoroethylene with a thickness of 0.010 Inch and no known melting point whereas FEP is fluoroethylenepropylene with thicknesses of 0.001 and 0.005 Inch and a melting point of 285 °C. The low-impedance gauges can be made in the symmetrical and non-symmetrical arrangements.
Typical pressure range of application is 50-500 Kbars (5-50 GPA). Other low-impedance Manganin gauges can be constructed with smaller element sizes and thinner Teflon insulation for specific applications. Click here to down load the calibration curve for this type gauge.

CARBON GAUGES, 50 OHM ( STRIP TYPE)

MODELS C300-50-EKRTE and FC300-50-EKRTE

Dynasen’s carbon stress gauges, types C300-50-EKRTE and FC300-50-EK, Silver Tabs, are single-strip graphite/epoxy sensor arrangements that are cemented with high temperature epoxy between two layers of Kapton insulation and connected to two vapor-deposited Cu leads. The name "silver tabs" reflects an improvement implemented by Dynasen in 1985 into the fabrication of its carbon gauges and has been used ever since.
The types C300 and FC300 indicate parallel and folded (superimposed) leads constructions respectively. Our C300-50-EKRTE gauges are for general applications whereas the FC300-50-EKRTE gauges are most useful in high electrical noise environments.
Carbon gauges can be made with a wide range of sensing element sizes (0.010-1.0 Inch) and Kapton insulation thicknesses (0.0005-0.005 Inch). They can also be made with Aluminum or Beryllium leads. Their typical range of application is 0.1-50 Kbars (0-5GPA). Upon ordering, please specify element size, lead and tab lengths, and insulation thickness. Consult our price lists for standard gauges.
